Caroling Brigade Targets Experian Credit Bureau

Carolers donning Santa hats gathered this morning outside the New York offices of Experian, the nation’s largest credit bureau, to sing holiday songs with lyrics altered to highlight the harmful use of people’s credit information in hiring and firing, and job promotion. To the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” the carolers sang, “You better watch out, when you apply / for that job, I’m telling you why / Credit checks are bringing us down!” (more…)
The NYC Coalition to Stop Credit Checks in Employment celebrated a historic labor and civil rights victory in 2015, when New York City enacted the nation’s strongest law banning employment credit checks. The coalition, which long fought to end this pernicious form of employment discrimination, now focuses on monitoring implementation and enforcement of the new law. Students from more than a dozen colleges and universities gathered today outside the Borough of Manhattan Community College to call on the NYC Council to ban credit checks by employers, which they said constitute an unfair barrier to jobs for students saddled with student loan debt.
